Rowing in Sarasota: Where Recreation Meets the World Stage

Sarasota may be best known for its beaches, arts, and waterfront lifestyle, but it has also earned an international reputation in the world of competitive rowing.

At the center of that reputation is Nathan Benderson Park, a world class rowing and recreational facility located near University Town Center and Interstate 75. With a 400 acre lake and a 3.5 mile paved trail surrounding the water, the park has become both a major sporting destination and an everyday gathering place for the community.

A World Class Rowing Destination

Nathan Benderson Park is considered one of the premier rowing venues in the United States. Its purpose designed competition course allows spectators to watch races from shore, creating an exciting experience that is not possible at many traditional rowing venues.

The park’s journey began when Sarasota County purchased the property in the early 1990s. Originally known as Cooper Creek Park, it was later renamed in honor of developer and philanthropist Nathan Benderson. The park hosted its first successful regatta in 2009 and continued evolving into the international sporting venue we know today.

Its international profile rose dramatically when Sarasota hosted the 2017 World Rowing Championships. Athletes from around the globe competed here, bringing international attention and millions of dollars in visitor spending to Sarasota and Manatee Counties. The park followed that achievement by hosting the 2018 World Rowing Masters Regatta.

Even more exciting, Nathan Benderson Park has been selected to host the 2028 World Rowing Championships from August 7 through August 13. The event will welcome Senior, Para, Under 23, and Under 19 athletes from around the world during the same summer as the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.

National Championships in Sarasota’s Backyard

You do not have to wait until 2028 to see elite rowing in Sarasota.

Nathan Benderson Park regularly welcomes youth, collegiate, masters, and national level competitions. Its calendar has included the USRowing Youth National Championships, USRowing Southeast Youth Championships, NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships, Big 12 Rowing Championship, U19 trials, and the annual Sarasota Invitational Regatta.

These events bring thousands of athletes, coaches, families, and spectators into the Sarasota area. Visitors stay in local hotels, dine in area restaurants, shop nearby, and often extend their trips to enjoy Sarasota’s beaches and attractions.

Nathan Benderson Park reported an economic impact of approximately $34.8 million during its 2019 fiscal year alone, illustrating how valuable the venue can be to the regional economy.

Sarasota Crew: Developing Athletes and Future Leaders

Competitive rowing in Sarasota is not limited to visiting athletes. Sarasota Crew gives local students the opportunity to train, compete, build confidence, and become part of a close knit team.

Founded in 2002, Sarasota Crew has grown into one of the largest community rowing organizations in the country. Its programs serve elementary, middle school, and high school students, along with adults and competitive masters rowers.

The organization teaches much more than rowing technique. Its mission emphasizes personal integrity, teamwork, sportsmanship, positive self esteem, community involvement, and a lifelong commitment to healthy living.

More than 2,000 young people have participated in its development programs, and many Sarasota Crew graduates have continued rowing in college. The organization has produced more than 40 national champions and has earned multiple state, regional, and national titles.

One of its most celebrated alumni is Clark Dean, who won a bronze medal with the United States Men’s Eight at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. His accomplishment demonstrates that young athletes training in Sarasota can progress from local waters to the Olympic podium.

Sarasota Crew offers programs at both Nathan Benderson Park and its Osprey location on Little Sarasota Bay. Beginners are welcome, and many youth programs require no previous rowing experience.

The organization also operates the Newtown Rowing Initiative, which provides scholarship opportunities for underserved middle and high school students. The program combines athletics with mentorship, life skills, and potential pathways to college scholarships.

Rowing Is Not Just for Students

One of the wonderful things about Sarasota’s rowing community is that the sport is available to adults as well.

Sarasota Crew offers Learn to Row instruction and a masters program for recreational and competitive adult rowers. Private lessons and group instruction help beginners become comfortable with the equipment, terminology, safety procedures, and rowing stroke.

Sarasota County Rowing Club also provides opportunities for masters rowers from its location near Blackburn Point in Osprey. Whether someone wants to compete, improve overall fitness, or simply enjoy peaceful mornings on the water, Sarasota offers several ways to become involved.

Rowing provides a full body, low impact workout that combines cardiovascular conditioning, strength, balance, concentration, and teamwork. Sarasota’s mild winters also allow athletes to spend more time on the water than rowers in colder parts of the country, making the area attractive for winter training and rowing camps.

More Than a Rowing Facility

Although rowing put Nathan Benderson Park on the international map, the park offers much more to local residents.

On any given day, visitors may be walking, running, bicycling, fishing, attending a community festival, participating in a fitness class, or enjoying the playground with their children. The lake also hosts dragon boat racing, stand up paddleboarding, and other paddling activities. Adult dragon boat programs welcome participants who are interested in recreation, exercise, camaraderie, or competition.

Its location is another important advantage. Nathan Benderson Park sits next to the shopping, restaurants, and entertainment surrounding University Town Center. It is also convenient to Lakewood Ranch, downtown Sarasota, Bradenton, and Interstate 75.

This creates a unique lifestyle combination. Residents can watch internationally recognized athletes compete in the morning, walk around the lake in the afternoon, enjoy dinner nearby, and still be within reach of Sarasota’s beaches and cultural attractions.

A Major Asset to the Sarasota Lifestyle

Nathan Benderson Park represents something special about living in Sarasota. This is a community where recreation, wellness, education, tourism, and international competition can all share the same stretch of water.

For young athletes, Sarasota Crew can provide discipline, friendship, confidence, and opportunities extending far beyond high school. For adults, rowing offers a new way to stay active and connected. For spectators, the park provides the rare opportunity to watch national and international championships close to home.

For the region as a whole, the facility attracts visitors, supports nearby businesses, strengthens Sarasota’s reputation, and adds another compelling dimension to the area’s quality of life.

Sarasota may be famous for what happens along the Gulf of Mexico, but at Nathan Benderson Park, some of the area’s most inspiring moments happen one perfectly synchronized stroke at a time.
