Departing from Marina Plaza in downtown Sarasota, Kathleen D offers public sails and private charters aboard spacious sailing catamarans. Experiences range from two-hour dolphin watches and sunset sails to three-hour sailing excursions, half-day adventures and a special monthly sunset-and-moonrise sail.

Longer excursions may include swimming and kayaking, while private charters can be tailored for families, visiting friends, birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations. The catamarans offer comfortable seating, shaded areas, onboard restrooms and plenty of space to enjoy the scenery without having to operate the boat yourself.

Do You Need a Boating License in Florida?

Florida does not issue a traditional “boating license.” However, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a motorboat with an engine of 10 horsepower or more must generally complete an approved boating-safety course and carry the required identification card.

Visitors who meet the age requirement may be able to obtain a temporary certificate valid for 90 days.

Review the current requirements with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission⁠ and confirm the rental company’s policies before your trip.

If you are uncertain about your qualifications or ability to navigate unfamiliar waterways, my recommendation is simple: hire a licensed captain or select an organized tour. It allows everyone to relax while an experienced professional handles the boat.
